Connection to Abraham Lincoln

John and Susannah's oldest son, Joseph married Mary Aylesworth. Mary's Great-Great-Grandparents include Obediah Holmes and Katherine Hyde (through their daughter Mary Holmes). According to the Holmes family history, their most famous descendant is Abraham Lincoln (they are his 5th Great Grandparents through their daughter Lydia Holmes). If this information is correct, then the Great Grandchildren of Joseph Olin and Mary Aylesworth would be 6th cousins to Abraham Lincoln.

A family, by the numbers

How big is your Olin family? I don't know if it's as big as some of your other lines, but it is quite sizable.

The table below shows the size of the John Olin and Susannah Spencer family through 13 generations. Only direct descendants of John are shown -- no spouses.

The incremental column shows how many Olins there are in each generation. For example, the only Olin in generation 1 is John. The second generation consists of his 4 children, and so on.

The cumulative column shows the total number of Olins starting with John.

Web Cards Updated

I have just updated the web family cards under the Genealogy link. I've refined my method of identifying people who can be listed safely without listing any still-living people. As a result, you'll find more people than have been listed before.

Please check your own family line. If you know that I can safely list more ancestors on your line, you can help me do so by sending me dates of death, even if only approximate, for those people who are not listed.

Thanks for electing me! I quit!

And now that I have your attention ....

The title of this article was inspired by a former real-life governor who is undecidedly not running for President. The sentiment behind it is decidedly different.

You have elected me president of the OFS. Unlike the organization's first president, Jo-Anne Moriarty, who served in that position for nearly 20 years, I will not be serving nearly that long. I'll state right now that I intend to be a one-term president. My reasons are both selfish and selfless.

I have put online some photos from the International Reunion.

I am hiding the link to the photos in a comment to this post. In order to see the comment, you must login to this site. If you don't have an account, sign up for one via the Login link. Registration on this site is free to all descendants of John OLIN and Susannah SPENCER, including spouses.

Thanks to Stephen Olan for providing the photos!

North of the Border - OLIN Family History Display Questions

The Reunion was over before I knew it. I barely spent any time in proximity to my display items. If any attendees have any unanswered questions please post them here on our website or you can send me an email at olinofla@gmail.com
For your information: The left side of the table included OLINs who are not members of our family. For example, the baseball player Steve OLIN was a Swedish-American OLIN, not one of ours. The boxer Bob OLIN is a Jewish-American OLIN, probably not one of ours.

Had a great time "North of the Border!"

The 2011 International OLIN/OLAN Reunion is over now, but everyone who attended will have pleasant memories of it for a long time!

The reunion committee, led by Bill Olan and Jo-Anne Moriarty, did an outstanding job. The facilities were great, the food was plentiful and delicious, and the fun was everywhere.

And the family! I hope everyone else enjoyed themselves as much as I did. It was great meeting old friends again and making new ones. Thanks to everyone for being there!

Phone Service in Canada

My family uses AT&T for our mobile phone service, and we're trying to figure out what we'll use while we're in Canada. AT&T has expensive roaming prices, so we don't want to use them.

If you use AT&T mobile service, consider turning off your phones well before you get near the border. We know people who have been hit with roaming charges because they were unknowingly on Canadian cell towers while physically still in the U.S.

Right now, we're planning to look for a cheap pre-paid cell phone when we get to Canada.
